Sonic CD: Desert DLC?

Sat 24 Dec - 17:36 by Gamma The Great

Some fans have gone so deep into the game (Sonic CD), they found a little extra peek at something ultimately cut from the final release:

"It" is called Desert Dazzle zone, according to developer Christian Whitehead. Speaking about it on the Sonic Retro forums, Whitehead said it was part of a planned extra level for the game, but never made it:

Christian Whitehead wrote:Basically, earlier on in the remake’s development there were 2 new levels: Desert Dazzle & Final Fever (another boss)

Neither level was fully complete, and we had to make the call whether or not to go ahead and finalize them. Sonic Team felt the game should not deviate too far from it’s original form, and in retrospect it was for the best since we had a lot of other work to do anyway.

I left this image in since it’s quite a groovy looking Zone, and it also serves as a way for you to get to the stage select as Tails.

Already, there are calls to add the Dust Hill inspired stage down the road as paid DLC.

Sonic CD: Developer Diary

Sat 24 Dec - 17:43 by Gamma The Great

The video clip, which is relayed above, focuses on art director Kazuyuki Hoshino and the work he contributed to the game. Hoshino goes into a fair bit of artistic and philosophical detail behind both Metal Sonic and Amy Rose’s roles as characters, as well as the general design behind stages, boss machines, and Sonic himself.

If you’re an art student or fan art aficionado, this is well worth your time. Take a look.

Sonic 06: 2D (Fangame)

Sat 24 Dec - 17:50 by Gamma The Great

Recently released was a long developed fan game based on the much maligned 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2D, or STH2D as it's called, aims to recreate the Sonic story via 2D side-scrolling, minus all the issues plaguing the original. The game contains nine levels and five bosses.

The nearly 300MB game can be downloaded in three parts via Mediafire. A launch trailer has also been released celebrating the game's completion. That's below.

Sonic CD Reviews: "Amazing"

Sat 24 Dec - 17:21 by Gamma The Great

Metacritic: 93

"For those of you eagerly awaiting Sonic 4: Episode II, listen up. SEGA is promoting Sonic CD as the direct prequel to Sonic 4. So not only is this a super fun Sonic game for XBLA, it potentially offers tips about SEGA’s upcoming projects. That’s two reasons to get it, I shouldn’t have to give you a third."

Sonic Generations: Glitch Exploit

Sat 24 Dec - 18:12 by Gamma The Great

To this point, the online leaderboards for the console versions of Sonic Generations have remained mostly problem-free.

That could change, however, at least on the Playstation 3, on which the video we're about to show you below was recorded. It comes from YouTuber DarkspinesSonic, who says the exploit, while quite monotonous, can freeze the timer during gameplay all the way to the end of the stage:

"So apparently if you pause immediately after unpausing in Sonic Generations, you move but the timer doesn’t. Whenever you bring up the PS3 Crossbar menu, the game is automatically paused. Therefore, if you press the PS button after unpausing, you’ll always do a frame perfect pause."

For those patient enough to try it, the glitch could wreak havoc on presently pristine console leaderboards. Reports suggest an update to Generations was released today, but it did not appear to fix the issue.

Cash Cash Receiving Death Threats

Sat 24 Dec - 18:09 by Gamma The Great

On December 6th, Jean Paul Makhlouf confirmed he was on the receiving end of a death threat via his voicemail.

It is not clear why the threat was relayed. Though we don't want to infer someone associated with Sonic or the Sonic community is responsible, it should be noted that for the moment, Cash Cash is best known for their involvement in Sonic Generations, producing several remixes for both the home console and 3DS editions of the game. The group also produced the image themes to Sonic Colors, Reach for the Stars and Speak with your Heart. Their latest album separate from their Sonic work was released in April.

For his part, Makhlouf appeared to take the issue in stride, calling the perpetrator out publicly:

"just got a death threat voicemail..bring it pussy, man up, unblock your # and ill give you my addy then meet you half way you lil bitchh ass"

It is not clear whether other band members, including Jean Pau'’s brother Alex, received similar threats.

Stardust Speedway: Dashboard Theme

Sat 24 Dec - 17:55 by Gamma The Great

We're not sure if this was deliberately planned as a surprise, or if fans will briefly benefit from another trademark Sega slip-up. But it's confirmed that a Sonic CD dashboard theme is available to download free of charge on the European Playstation store.

The theme, from the climactic Metal Sonic race in Stardust Speedway, carries both a good and bad future motif.

If a legitimate release, it's likely to drop on the US PSN soon, though when is anyone's guess.
